I am excited to have the following students working in my lab:

Current Students

Shub Mishra

Shubhanshu Mishra
PhD student, iSchool

Shubhanshu Mishra is a 5th year PhD student at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He uses large scale data mining and machine learning techniques, to extract information such as opinions, entities, and ontologies from social data - e.g. online social networks and scientific publication networks. His current projects are focused on utilizing weak signals from diverse sparsely annotated datasets to learn unified information extraction systems --using semi-supervised learning, on-line learning, and deep learning. His prior research projects included studying topical novelty of scientific articles, measuring relative topical expertise of authors on an article, and studying factors which affect the self-citation practices by authors. He has created many open source tools based on his prior research projects. He finished his Integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mathematics and Computing from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 2012. During 2008-2012, he was a fellow of Kishor Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), a scholarship program funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. Updated information about his research can be found at http://shubhanshu.com.

Aseel Addawood

Aseel Addawood
PhD student, Informatics

Aseel Addawood is a fourth year PhD candidate at the Illinois Informatics Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on developing social computational methods to help with better understanding individuals behavior and attitude in social media. Her current interest involve understanding information sharing behavior of individuals while discussing controversial health issues in social media. Prior to joining UIUC, Aseel earned her MEng in Computer Science from Cornell University. More about her can be found Here.

Ming Jiang

Ming Jiang
PhD student, iSchool

Ming Jiang is a PhD student at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the iSchool, Ming earned her M.S. in Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh, where she researched on location-based information services. Her current research focuses on text mining and natural language processing, and she is interested in developing computational methods for better understanding the propagation of information from public discourse. More about her can be found Here.

Shadi Rezapour

Rezvaneh "Shadi" Rezapour
PhD student, iSchool

Shadi Rezapour is a third year PhD student at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is conducting research on topics related to natural language processing, machine learning, and network analysis. Specifically, she is interested in studying and understanding(online) text by leveraging computational linguistics techniques and social science theories. In the past couple of years, she has been developing, implementing, and applying a theory-driven, computational solution for assessing the impact of information products on people, groups, and society.

Ly Dinh

Ly Dinh
PhD student, iSchool

Ly Dinh is a second year PhD student at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her current academic interest is on computational social science, specifically on how digital research methods such as network analysis and social simulation models can be used to advance our understanding of various social and organizational systems. With an academic background in communication and technology that persevere for the past six years, she is eager to adopt network analysis, text mining, behavioral modeling in order to examine social and communicative dynamics in small groups and organizations throughout her academic career. Her ultimate goal is to be actively involved with research and teaching in the information science and communication disciplines. She is currently working with Dr. Jana Diesner on the uses of social media data for humanitarian response, and how AI/Machine Learning can be implemented to ensure effective disaster response and recovery.

Jessica Schmiederer

Jessica Schmiederer
Junior, Actuarial Science and Economics, with minors in Informatics and Business

Jessica Schmiederer is a Junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is currently studying Actuarial Science and Economics, with minors in Informatics and Business. She is from Prospect Heights, Illinois. She is involved in Illinithon, which is a year-long fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and She serves as the Finance Assistant Director. She is also involved in the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and the Actuarial Science Club.

Tiffany Lu

Tiffany Lu
Junior, Computer Engineering

Tiffany Lu is currently a Junior in Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests consist of data analysis, big data, and natural language processing. She is also interested in how people and technology influence and shape each other.

Julian Chin

Chieh-Li "Julian" Chin
Research Scientist, iSchool
Master of Computer Science, UIUC (2013)
Master of Science in Library and Information Science, UIUC (2012)

Julian Chin is a Research Scientist at the School of Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has assisted with software development, data analysis, project management, and grant administration for multiple projects at iSchool, including Smart Gigabit Communities project, Urbana Champaign Big Broadband (UC2B) project, and several text and network analysis projects in Dr. Diesner's lab. Her research interest mainly focuses on the use of information technology in complicated settings to support communication. She also studies how researchers can be compliant with the data regulations when conducting research. She earned her master's degree from the iSchool and the Department of Computer Science at UIUC.
